The Best to do in Cabo San Lucas

By David Webster

Cabo San Lucas is a wonderful oasis at the south end of the Baja peninsula of Mexico where the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet.  Know as the jewel of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo San Lucas has something for everyone. There are so many things to do in Cabo San Lucas and Los Cabos that it's almost hard to know where to start!  Whatever you are looking for, from an adrenaline packed vacation to a relaxing sojourn under the sun, you will find what you want in Cabo San Lucas.
I went down with our photographer, Larry Dunmire, who was on assignment with “Sea Magazine” to take some pictures of 2 separate fishing boats.  He took pictures of one of the boats while being on the second boat, and then we changed boats to take pictures of that boat.  Once this was done, we went Marlin fishing.

We could see many of the Marlin basking in the sun, but not one was being enticed by the lures we were trolling with.  Our deck hand decided to start trolling using some live bait on a smaller pole with 20 pound test line with a Penn 500 reel.  To our surprise, a 295 pound blue Marlin took the bait and the fun began.  Since the line and pole were not made to withstand this kind of pressure, the captain of the boat had to keep maneuvering the boat to keep the line from breaking.
The screws holding the reel went flying out, the line was smoking from the fish running away from the boat so rapidly that the deck hand had to keep pouring water on it to cool it down, and after an hour and a half, we finally were able to land this beauty and bring it to shore to have it weighed.

The next day we took out the small motorized boat called a Ponga for some Dorado fishing.  That was a blast and to me a lot more fun than the fishing for Marlin.  Dorado is Mahi Mahi and tastes fantastic.  Dorado is a real fighting fish and a lot of fun to catch.  I highly recommend doing this if you like to fish.
The next adventure that we took was to go horseback riding.  We took the ride that takes you through old town Cabo through the Great Thorn Forest and ended up at an old abandoned light house on the beach.  The ride took us though the Arroyo San Carlos or Venado Blanco viewing awe inspiring rock formations and narrow canyons.  It really felt as though we were filming a John Wayne cowboy movie.
